Smart Phones are Chipping Away at Us—Do You Need to Change?

Using our mobile phones are causing issues that most of us are clueless about. Did you know that by bending forward a lot we can get a thing called chicken-neck? Yeah, chicken neck! Chicken neck is that hanging skin on people’s necks that is usually only seen on older people. But now, because of the constant use of mobile devices, people in their 40’s are being saddled with this unattractive look. In addition, trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis), a problematic hand issue that sometimes needs surgery can be caused by over use of mobile devices. And getting back to the neck, another neck issue called tech-neck where people have serious neck pain comes about as well. Eye damage, lack of desire to communicate with real people, car accidents and short attention spans are all damaging the quality of people’s lives because of mobile device overuse. And addiction. Stone cold real addiction is happening as well. Some people need their smart phones as badly as an alcoholic needs his next shot of Jack.

Some people use their phones so much so that they just glance at the real world ‘out there’. However, they’re right on top of seeing everything on their mobile devices. In addition, more and more people would prefer to text rather than talk one-on-one with a real person.

A big-shot corporate attorney that I once worked with on a case told me that he didn’t have a smart phone. When I shockingly said, “No way!” he smiled and told me that he works from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Mondays through Friday and uses his land –line to conduct business. Once he was done for the day, he would disconnect from the high stress and grind of his business life and enjoy living. He was a successful well to do attorney in his 40’s. He was thriving without a portable mobile device stuck to his face!

So what’s too much use on a mobile device? That’s the $64,000 question. But when we’re just glancing at life or our loved ones and not fully looking at them, or we have neck or hand injuries or talking to real human beings doesn’t really do it for us anymore, it’s time to regroup and realize the folly of our ways. I know I had to regroup a bit and start using my smartphone less.

Go for a walk in the woods. Really look, not just glance at people, your pets and life around you and see that really experiencing life in living color is awesome. Socialize when you’re with people—leave that phone off 100% of the time at functions where real living breathing human beings are at. Do it for you. You’ll feel better for being you again and for assessing, analyzing and pondering everything by yourself.  After all, you’re the biggest and baldest computer around.
