Yuppies, Hipsters, Wannabes and Dorks

Voiced by Amazon Polly

Who really rules? Who rocks it in satisfaction, contentment and happiness? Is it the Yuppies? The term used to stand for Young Urban Professionals but has strayed in definition to someone who not only is doing well financially, but is all about money and status—the epitome of cool. Are they the ones? How about the Hipsters that the Urban Dictionary describes as people, “That try hard to be different (and genuinely do think that they’re being different), by rejecting anything they deem to be too popular”? Or is it the Wannabes which can be defined as a person who wants or aspires to be someone or something else or who tries to look or act like someone else. Are they the ones? Wait, I forgot one, the Dork? You know the people who are quirky, silly, and/or socially inept, or ones who are out of touch with contemporary trends. Are they the ones?

Who does better in life? By better meaning living comfortably monetarily and with self-satisfaction and happiness? Well we know it can’t be the Dork as they’re not in the cool crowd at school or work, don’t wear a lot of sexy makeup and tight clothes and are considered socially inept. So let’s jump right to the Yuppies instead. All that money and being so cool that they’re simply the bomb, they have to be right up on the satisfaction and happiness scale—don’t you think? Or how about those Hipsters that are not in the mainstream crowd, in fact, if they become mainstream they dive right out of that stream and wade right into some other stream to be different? Maybe those complete non-conformists are the happiest and most satisfied? Let’s not forget the Wannabes but people who want to be something else probably aren’t too content and happy so we could probably leave them out of serious contention.

So what do you think? Which group is most likely to be the best off and happiest? If you say that groups can’t be lumped into such categories, people can be, but groups shouldn’t be, probably puts you in the Hipster category but that’s certainly true and by the way, I hate labels but read along and see where all this ends up. So, do you have a rough idea or opinion?

Drum roll . .  it’s my turn. What’s my opinion? I say the Dorks. The girls and women who don’t slather makeup on and don’t wear clothes that show every curve or 60% of their breasts. The men and women who smile at a cute cat or dog, a good book, a simple passion or a great grandparent. Those supposed Dorks who just smile at the simple wonders of people and the world. Those who may not talk like a radio DJ but talk truthfully from their hearts.  I think those people, if they can make it out of school by not being over bullied to the point where it emotionally twists them, are the luckiest, most satisfied and happiest group. They’re living life in its real splendors. In the long run, they’re the lucky ones. As they get older they’ll shine even more. If I had to do it over again I’d strive to be a supposed Dork. But it’s hard to be a Dork in a world full of those whom demean regular people. I probably wouldn’t have been strong enough to be a dork as a kid, in fact, I had a chance in school once but I chose the easy way and stayed with a group of ‘cool ‘people.

Kudos to the supposed Dorks and the parents who develop and nurture them. Eventually, they rule and they are the true successes in life.
